경기도 부천, 공정무역도시 비전 선포
경기도 부천시가 지난해 12월 5일 공정무역타운 캠페인의 성료와 함께 국내 최초로 전 세계 공정무역타운 네트워크 가입을 위한 비전 선포식을 거행했다. 부천시청에서 개최된 공식 행사에는 국제공정무역기구 본부 글로벌 프로젝트 책임자를 비롯해 영국, 브라질, 콜롬비아 등 공정무역 제품 주요 생산국 및 소비국의 주한 대사, UNDP 대표자, 시민 등 300여 명이 참석했다. 부천대학교와 순복음중동교회에는 각각 공정무역캠퍼스와 공정무역교회임을 인증하는 인증서가 전달됐으며 현대백화점 중동점, 부천시수퍼마켓협동조합, 부천시전통시장상인연합회에도 공정무역 제품 판매를 통해 시민들에게 글로벌 시민운동 참여 기회를 제공하는 역할에 대한 인증서가 수여됐다.
Bucheon city to become the first Fairtrade Town in the country
On December 5th, the city of Bucheon has celebrated the finalization of its campaign to become the first Fairtrade Town in Korea, joining a family of more than 1,850 Fairtrade towns all over the world. Around 300 guests participated in this official ceremony that took place at Bucheon City Hall, including the global project manager from Fairtrade International, Ambassadors of Fairtrade product’s producers and consumers countries, a representative of UNDP Korea and local citizens. Bucheon University was awarded a Fairtrade campus certificate and the Full Gospel Jungdong church was also awarded with the first Fairtrade church certificate by Fairtrade Korea. Hyundai Department Store Jungdong, Bucheon City Supermarket Association, and Bucheon Market Merchants Association were also awarded with certificates for their commitment in providing Bucheon citizens with better access to Fairtrade products in their daily life.

Fairtrade as a boost for hospitality business
Some people raise the question of whether Fairtrade also make good business sense. According to a Tripadvisor.com survey conducted in 2012, more than 70% of surveyees planned to make more eco-friendly travel choices in their next trip. The survey result shows that Fairtrade can be an unique selling point to attract guests. The Green House in the UK is one of the examples that shows its commitment to Fairtrade. In addition to using Fairtrade produce including coffee, tea, wine, and juice and organic Fairtrade bed linen, the hotel has even provided its staff with uniforms made with Fairtrade cotton. Due to their seriousness about substantiality, The Green House became the winner of 2017 Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence in the Best Green Hotel category.

국제공정무역기구, 코코아 산업에 대한 영향 확대
국제공정무역기구는 영국의 제과기업 캐드버리와 협업해 캐드버리의 ‘코코아 라이프’ 프로그램을 전 세계 주요시장으로 확대함으로써 더 많은 코코아 농부와 그들의 가족, 커뮤니티를 지원할 예정이다. 2008년 가나에서 론칭한 코코아 라이프는 농부 교육 및 권한 강화를 통해 지속가능한 코코아 농업과 농장 공동체의 번영을 도모하는 프로그램이다. 가나에서 코코아 라이프 프로그램에 참여하는 농부는 그렇지 않은 농부보다 소득이 49% 더 많다는 조사결과가 발표된 바 있다. 국제공정무역기구와의 협업을 통한 이 프로그램의 확대는 가나, 코트디부아르, 인도네시아, 도미니카 공화국, 인도, 브라질의 코코아 농장 내 20만 명의 농부들과 1백만 명의 사람들에게 더 큰 혜택을 제공할 것이다.
Fairtrade works towards greater impact on cocoa farmers and their communities
Fairtrade is now to help more cocoa farmers, their families and communities by extending the Cocoa Life program globally in cooperation with Cadbury. Launched in Ghana in 2008, Cadbury’s Cocoa Life is a program to promote sustainable cocoa farming and thriving of the whole communities and through education and empowerment of cocoa farmers. The independent verification shows that farmers’ in the Cocoa Life programme in Ghana have seen their incomes increase 49% more than farms outside the program. It is expected that the expansion of Cocoa Life will benefit 200,000 farmers and 1 million people in communities in Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, India and Brazil.
